On Freedom Day in April 2012, the South African Consulate General in Chicago brought people together for a heartfelt celebration of South Africa’s journey from apartheid to democracy. The gathering also marked the launch of Color Me Africa Fine Arts, adding an uplifting creative milestone to an already meaningful occasion.

The program opened with a warm benediction that invited everyone to pause, reflect, and appreciate how far the country had come. Proclamations from the Governor of Illinois and the Mayor of Chicago followed, affirming how deeply Freedom Day resonates not just with South Africans, but with the broader Chicago community that has long shared in the values of justice, dignity, and equality.

Chicago’s own anti-apartheid activists took the stage to share memories of their involvement in the struggle. Their stories—personal, candid, and often emotional—served as a reminder of the solidarity that crossed oceans and helped sustain the fight for freedom. Their presence underscored the powerful role that everyday people and grassroots movements played in turning the tide against apartheid.

Throughout the event, there was a palpable sense of gratitude for the victories achieved and a renewed commitment to the work still ahead. It was a moment to honor the past while celebrating the ongoing pursuit of justice carried forward by both South Africans and their allies in Chicago.

At the heart of the celebration was the “Apartheid to Freedom” art exhibition, featuring 20 evocative works by South African artists—10 portraying the painful realities of apartheid, and 10 reflecting the hope and transformation of the post-apartheid era. Presented in partnership with Color Me Africa Fine Arts, the exhibition beautifully bridged history and healing, capturing the spirit of Freedom Day through artistic expression.
