PREMILA SINGH

Biography of Premila Singh
An Artistic Journey
Premila Singh has been passionate about sketching and painting for as long as she can remember. Her artistic journey began in childhood when she would sketch on the white tablecloths her mother laid out for evening tea. Rather than scolding her, Premila's mother encouraged her creativity, fostering a supportive environment for her budding talent.
At the age of 11, Premila participated in an all-India competition organized by the Illustrated Weekly and won first prize for her self-portrait. Her academic achievements were equally notable; she completed her master’s degree in psychology, topping the University and earning a gold medal. Premila graduated from Loreto Convent in Lucknow before embarking on her journeys beyond India.
Her first trip to South Africa in 1994 was for business, but it marked the beginning of an extensive engagement with the African continent. The profound impact of Africa on her artistic work has been tremendous. Over the last two decades, Premila has passionately painted African people, wildlife, landscapes, and seascapes. Her vibrant depictions capture the essence of the continent's beauty and diversity.
Premila's first exhibition was held in Johannesburg in 2004, opened by Mr. Jagdish Tytler and sponsored by the Indian Embassy in South Africa. After a long hiatus, she decided to bring her works back to India, where her exhibitions have been very well received.
Premila Singh's journey is a testament to her dedication to art and the influential role of her experiences across continents. Her works continue to resonate with audiences, reflecting her deep connection to the cultural and natural landscapes of Africa.
